I purchased one of the first Mac Pros in and was shocked when Apple dropped support for that very expensive machine only six years later five for those who purchased a 2,1. Actually, the former version already did that but it was written in PowerPC code, so I upgraded just for it to run on my new machine.
Most absurdly, I can apparently run CS3 on a Windows machine under Win7 , 8 or 10 with no problems at all. Actually, I just purchased a used version of CS3 for Windows so if that may be any help to anyone: I know we all dislike working in Windows but that could be a viable solution until a better one shows up.

Basically everything has to be re-bought in newer versions. Since the new Mac Pro was quite highly priced compared to the older model — It made more sense for now to go for the model, load it with RAM and fast SSD-disks, and then in the future eventually upgrade to the newer Mac Pro and migrate the disks. But many things are different in CS6, for example I often work with a lot of photos simultaneously, on several larger screens, for arranging what order the photos should be in for an exhibition.
With CS3 this worked perfectly, but with CS6 its very easy happened that each photo joins together with another photo when moving around the photos, and once this happens, everything gets destroyed — Frustrating… So for now I need to keep both CS3 and CS6 to be able continue a good workflow. As already explained in this page, Adobe retired the activation servers — I had contact with Adobe support, but very poor audio quality from Adobe representant located in India, could barely hear him.
