This is one of the reasons I couldn’t have a single project for multiple songs. But once you get used to doing it it becomes pretty simple. I just downloaded the free 30 day demo to my old i7 laptop. Had to remove some old VSTs that crashed during validation. AUs passed fine. First impressions, after 1 hour MIDI only use: Very different workflow seems well thought out and geared for speedy entry.

Ex: hover pointer over track to “audition” it to live midi input. Also appreciate that there is a visual metronome option, rather shocking flashing light. Logic ProX also has key commands for “select projects” for all open projects if you open more at once, i will try OnStageX if single-project approach proves to be unreliable. Just got back to this lively discussion and took a look.

The version from Zenaud. Maybe you had an old version. There is now ‘scripted tempo automation’ for pre programmed tempo changes? While briefly testing I even accidentally changed tempo with a live cc input. There are a few limitations for me, since I do use sculpture for a few live sounds which means i’m confined to either logic or mainstage or running one of those in background.

Click the Record button in the control bar or press R to start recording. Start playing scenes, cells, or a combination of both. If you queue cells or scenes before clicking the Record button, they will start playing when recording starts. Click the Stop button in the control bar or press the Space bar to stop recording.

So either way I’m not sure what the benefit really is. Load times in logic are not long. If they are you need to rethink your live set. Sure it takes a bit of work to make the transfer but it is rock solid. Songs are accessible either from an array of clickable tiles, a menu or a programmable set list with a “next song” button, all of which then route the SPD notes which are always the same to the correct EXS keys.

So no loading times, instant access to all songs and still a set list to gaze at when being bored in the second verse. End the end we all could make it work one way or the other. I want to use a vocal fx chain off of my rig while they run stems You have to see MS as a big synth workstation that you can route external stuff in it but there is nothing to playback automation to my knowledge.

I don’t see why Logic wouldn’t work. But with Logic, you’d have to load a new project before each new song. MS loads all its settings on startup, so everything’s available instantly. The biggest issue with logic in a live setting is that you have to make the tracks you want to play live If you have multiple songs with multiple tracks you have to remember to put the tracks in live mode every time you start a song.

Other than that I find logic usable for live applications. I usually turnoff the track so that I can still see the midi events to remember passages, changes etc. Anything you make “live” whether via record arming or live input arming will stay on one core unless specifically implemented otherwise by devs.

What the OP seems to be asking for is a sequencer to run alongside Mainstage, as mainstage lacks the timeline that Logic has. There are many 3rd party sequencers out there that will happily run midi only alongside mainstage, and Logic may also be used this way.

The problem imo with Logic is that it’s built for efficiency and thus getting your midi to run realtime requires the same ‘live’ arming tricks mentioned above so it’s in sync with the core audio buffersize rather than the ‘mix’ buffer setting in Logic.

My thought is to be sent the live vocal from them on an AUX. I can just send them all the effect on a stereo channel and they can control the overall output. Though it’s a heavy fx chain, it’s still not intense compared to running soft synths.. Or are there any latency concerns?

Not that this would happen Your best bet would be to try it a few days before hand. I have had a few glitches with the Playback engine in MS but that was probably user error. You can download it from the Voloco website. Voloco is fantastic for hard tuning effects, but doesn’t do too well on the natural tuning side.

You have multiple settings on Voloco you can choose from including a Vocoder, Hard Tune, and even an Alien Voice setting. Hi everyone, I’ve been playing live with my Originals band for a couple of years now and we’ve got quite a Synthy sound to us so we run backing tracks live – as well as, live guitar, bass, drums, and keys.

The backing track stuff was super new for us when we started and I ended up just settling on Logic Sessions with 8 tracks Drums, Bass, Risers, Percussion, Backings etc. I’ve set all our live songs up in one big Logic timeline and just use markers and arraignment to move songs on the fly for setlists or change of mood.

I tried messing around with Mainstage and triggering on SPDs and such, but I got super frustrated with a bunch of things. This included not having the ability to scrub through tracks – so in rehearsals if we want to nail one part, we couldnt just jump to that section. Another was the ability to control individual tracks for levelling and mix purposes. I’ve also got a little Midi Mixer via USB to move any volume things on the fly on stage whilst im playing guitar.

Are there other programs out there that can offer me the same versatility without clogging up a session? Is there a better way to run my sessions in Logic so I can chop and change songs? I’d love to know what solutions there might be out there, as I’m pretty amateur with this backing track stuff.

You can export wav files from Logic and import them in Multitracker. There you can adjust volumes of the tracks, move the playhead, make playlists or load the songs via Midi Prg changes.

If you own a multichannel USB audio interface, you can assign the tracks to the outputs as you like I use Logic for my live backing tracks, placing the tracks for each song in a track stack folder , which I then collapse, so you only see the track stack header. These are arranged sequentially along the time-line, but because they are on different tracks, I can re-arrange the set list by simply dragging the stacks around till you get them in the order you want.

I then set the play button in the transport to ‘play from selected section’. I then highlight the header of the first song stack that I want to perform and hit play the playhead automatically jumps to the right place.

I’ve placed a ‘stop playback’ midi command at the end of each song, which means does exactly what it says, so that when I’m ready to play the next song, I simply hit the down arrow, highlighting the next stack header and hit play again. My arrange window looks like this below. Happy to explain further, if you require – it works really well for me. I also have midi cc and pc programmed in for each song, included in each stack, to automate my fx and amp switching and light show.
