Unobtrusive, minimal UI. Exclusive “hog” mode. Gen-IV bit playback engine. Full memory playback with triple-buffering to ensure continuous playback of large files. Automatic sample rate switching. Choice of sample rate converters for up- and down-sampling. Dithered bit depth reduction and volume control. Support for iTunes “sound check”. Playback from networked drives.

Icon design by Doug Stewart designbyadmiral. It doesn’t feel like the developer is still supporting this App. That’s too bad. I guess they are spending the time on their new DSD app. What a huge leap in iTunes sound quality!

When my wife came into the sound room she was asking if I had purchased a new component. Wow I thought music produced by my system sounded good but once I added the BitPerfect application, I was in audio nirvana.

The changes through my electrostatic speakers was way more than I expected – much improved soundstage in depth, transient response, and musicality. I tried a much more expensive player several years ago and must say that BitPerfect hits a homer! The sound to my friend was significantly better, but I kept thinking that a good software solution would have allowed the DAC to sound better. When I got home, I took a look at my BitPerfect settings, referenced the manual, and noodled around some more.

I see television streaming services going through the same growing pains, now: my Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime, also offer purchase and renting of titles they don’t offer for free, and also give you access to other streaming services or channels you have to pay extra for And it doesn’t make it any easier, when you notice that some services won’t give you access to other specific services, due to corporate competition.

All the audio software hierarchies want to be all things to all people nowadays, because of competition – they have to. If I ever decide which program I run, it will all be because of my personal library, not how well they integrate a streaming service.

That will be my priority, along with how to take some of the softwares’ functions off their hands, if I choose to do some of the legwork myself for instance, I have different needs for categorizing and tagging different parts of my collection, so I would be disappointed if roon took over, and re-organized everything the same way, and I would up with untangling what roon thought, was a perfectly-organized jumble.

I don’t go to Bed, Bath and Beyond for a pizza cutter, to find one that also shreds cheese – that’s what a cheese shredder is for. And, if I did find a tool that did both tasks Come to think of it, there’s a helluva lot of things you could do in the bath, that you couldn’t do in bed Dillydipper , Dec 22, Bingo Bongo and Go Mifune like this.

Location: Portland, Oregon. Roon is a nice interface — if you like its interface. It’s especially useful for people with large local music collections that aren’t well tagged, or for those who need to find classical music on Qobuz or Tidal, as the native interfaces are just so-so. If you don’t need or like it, it is expensive and has heavy hardware requirements. I use Qobuz very happily without Roon.

I would think but don’t know it would do the same on Mac. I know nothing about Spotify, but I’d bet money it doesn’t rely on any other programs to work fine. For playing your own files, you need a player program. The classic design e. Some such programs have other features, too. For managing and playing local music files, I use JRiver.

I have to agree with chervokas , it’s not the prettiest program, but it does a lot and sends audio out bit perfect. It is excellent for library management, and you can add custom “views” of your music — say by genre, composer, date, etc. Unlike some other programs, it won’t change your files if you don’t want it to — won’t move them, for example.

It does not interface with Qobuz or Spotify, but maybe that’s OK. It offers a ton of functionality CD making, ripping, media server, format conversion, convolution for room correction, file comparison for relatively little money.

I have not tried Audirvana, but clearly many like it. Whether you will hear a difference from JRiver’s bit-perfect output, I can’t say. I would imagine that is very system- and listener-specific. I hope that helps. If we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic, I’d invite you over to see and hear my streaming systems in person. I’m enjoying roon with tidal, spotify and my own library of flacs. You don’t need a new dac for tidal, you will need bridges for each additional stereo you have, but these can be raspberry pis with usb DACs.

When using Spotify, I don’t use roon, I use spotify connect on the bridges. Using Spotify less and less. There are sites that will transfer your playlists from one service to another, and continue to do so if you subscribe one time transfers were free , so I was able to transfer my Spotify playlists to Tidal, and only 1 tune was not there from all my converted playlists.
